Anna began singing Sacred Harp as a teenager going to singings in backcountry Quaker meeting houses in rural Pennsylvania, where she grew up. She has been singing shape note music for over 15 years and has studied with many traditional singers in Alabama and Georgia. Anna travels regularly to attend singings across the US and Canada, and is the coordinator of the weekly Burlington Sacred Harp group. She also sings with the Burlington-based Beulah Land Jubilee Gospel Quartet and Social Band. Anna enjoys sharing her love of Sacred Harp singing and making this singing style accessible to new singers in a friendly and supportive setting. An anthropologist, Anna values the history and culture of the Sacred Harp tradition and believes it is important to keep Sacred Harp singing embedded in its tradition as an inclusive community singing activity.
